Excavation safety Toolbox Talk
Excavations can collapse without warning and may contain services, water or dangerous atmospheres. Protection must be designed and installed before anyone enters danger.
Key points
- Locate services and assess ground, depth, water and nearby loads.
- Prevent collapse by battering, benching or a suitable support system.
- Keep spoil, plant and materials back from the edge.
- Provide guarded edges and safe access and egress.
- Inspect by a competent person at required times and after events affecting stability.
- Control water ingress, vehicles and falling materials.
- Test the atmosphere and apply confined-space controls where the risk indicates.
Do
- Use the specified protective system.
- Record statutory inspections.
- Stop after ground movement or water ingress.
Don't
- Do not enter an unsupported excavation.
- Do not work under suspended loads.
- Do not rely on a ladder as edge protection.
Questions to ask the group
- What prevents collapse?
- When was it inspected?
- Where are the services and spoil limits?
