Eye and face protection Toolbox Talk
Flying particles, dust, chemicals, radiation and molten material need different protection. Ordinary spectacles are not safety eyewear.
Key points
- Identify impact, splash, dust, optical-radiation and heat hazards.
- Select the correct protection standard, marking and shade.
- Use goggles for splash or fine dust where glasses do not seal.
- Use a face shield with, not instead of, primary eye protection where required.
- Ensure compatibility with RPE, hearing and head protection.
- Keep lenses clean and replace scratched, cracked or contaminated items.
- Protect nearby workers with screens and exclusion zones.
Do
- Wear protection before exposure starts.
- Adjust it for a secure fit.
- Use prescription safety eyewear if needed.
Don't
- Do not look at welding arcs without suitable protection.
- Do not use tinted lenses of unknown shade.
- Do not lift protection while the tool runs.
Questions to ask the group
- What is the eye hazard?
- Why is this protector suitable?
- Does it fit with other PPE?
