Hearing protection Toolbox Talk
Hearing protection only reduces exposure when the right type is fitted continuously in the noise zone. It must support, not replace, source and engineering controls.
Key points
- Wear the protection specified by the noise assessment and zone signs.
- Fit plugs with clean hands and check earmuff seals.
- Choose protection compatible with helmets, glasses and RPE.
- Do not overprotect where alarms or communication must remain audible.
- Replace worn cushions, damaged bands and dirty disposable plugs.
- Keep protection on for the whole exposure period.
- Report tinnitus, muffled hearing or difficulty understanding speech.
Do
- Practise correct plug insertion.
- Store reusable protection clean.
- Attend hearing surveillance.
Don't
- Do not modify earmuffs.
- Do not share dirty plugs.
- Do not remove protection for short noisy tasks.
