Safe use of ladders and stepladders Toolbox Talk
Ladders are suitable only for low-risk, short-duration work after assessment. The ladder, ground and user must all be right for the job.
Key points
- Use a safer work platform where reasonably practicable.
- Check stiles, rungs, feet, hinges and locking restraints before use.
- Set a leaning ladder at about one out for every four up and secure it.
- Place every foot on firm, level, clean ground.
- Maintain three points of contact and keep your belt buckle between the stiles.
- Face the ladder and carry only light items that leave safe handholds.
- Respect manufacturer markings, load limits and the highest safe standing level.
Do
- Use the correct industrial ladder length and type.
- Lock stepladder restraints fully.
- Quarantine damaged ladders.
Don't
- Do not overreach or stand on the top steps.
- Do not rest ladders on fragile or movable surfaces.
- Do not move a ladder while occupied.
Questions to ask the group
- Why is a ladder suitable for this task?
- How will it be secured?
- What defects would make you quarantine it?
