Noise at work Toolbox Talk
Noise-induced hearing loss is permanent and usually develops unnoticed. Reduce noise at source and use hearing protection as a controlled final layer.
Key points
- Identify noisy tasks and people exposed, including nearby workers.
- Select quieter methods and equipment and maintain them.
- Enclose, isolate or increase distance from noise.
- Limit exposure time and coordinate simultaneous noisy work.
- Mark hearing-protection zones and enforce the specified protection.
- Fit, inspect and store hearing protection correctly.
- Provide hearing checks where the risk assessment requires health surveillance.
Do
- Wear protection before entering a signed zone.
- Report ringing or muffled hearing.
- Keep seals and plugs clean.
Don't
- Do not remove protection to talk in a noisy area.
- Do not overprotect so warnings cannot be heard.
- Do not assume short loud tasks are harmless.
Questions to ask the group
- What is the main noise source today?
- Can it be reduced or isolated?
- Which protection is specified?
