Personal protective equipment Toolbox Talk
PPE is the last line of defence, not the first control. It works only when it is suitable, compatible, fitted, maintained and actually worn.
Key points
- Control the hazard at source before specifying PPE.
- Select PPE for the hazard, wearer, task and working conditions.
- Check that eye, hearing, head and respiratory protection work together.
- Inspect before use and replace damaged, contaminated or expired items.
- Fit and adjust PPE for the individual wearer.
- Store reusable PPE clean, dry and protected.
- Provide information, training and supervision without charging workers.
Do
- Use the specified standard and size.
- Report fit or compatibility problems.
- Clean shared PPE between users.
Don't
- Do not modify PPE.
- Do not share personal-fit items without hygiene controls.
- Do not assume PPE removes the hazard.
Questions to ask the group
- What hazard does each item protect against?
- Does your PPE fit and work together?
- When must it be replaced?
