Protecting the public Toolbox Talk
Members of the public do not know the site hazards and may include children or vulnerable people. Secure the boundary and design work so a simple mistake outside it cannot cause harm.
Key points
- Maintain secure fencing, gates and controlled access.
- Separate public routes from plant, deliveries and work areas.
- Prevent falling tools, materials, dust, noise and debris leaving the site.
- Cover or guard excavations and remove climbing opportunities.
- Plan deliveries and vehicle movements for public conditions.
- Provide clear signs without relying on signs alone.
- Inspect the boundary after work and secure plant, ladders and hazardous materials.
Do
- Challenge unauthorised entry safely.
- Use banksmen at interfaces.
- Report damaged barriers immediately.
Don't
- Do not leave gates open or keys in plant.
- Do not swing loads over public areas.
- Do not create unguarded pavement hazards.
Questions to ask the group
- Where can the public meet our work?
- What prevents unauthorised access?
- How is the site secured at close?
