RAMS template for gas engineers
Gas-engineering RAMS should identify the fuel, appliance, installation, work category and sequence for isolation, testing, work, commissioning and handover. Fire, explosion, carbon monoxide, uncontrolled release, ignition during purging and work in confined locations can be fatal. The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998 are central to relevant downstream gas work. Anyone carrying out gas work within scope must be Gas Safe registered and hold the correct current categories for the appliance and work; SitePaper cannot establish that competence. Confirm isolation and ventilation, control ignition sources, use suitable calibrated test equipment and follow recognised tightness-testing and purging procedures. Record commissioning results, flue and combustion checks, warning notices and the action taken if an unsafe situation is found.
- ✓Typical gas engineer tasks: Manual handling of materials, Use of portable power tools, Safe electrical isolation, Hot work

In short
A RAMS (risk assessment and method statement) is a combined document that identifies the hazards of a specific job, the controls that reduce the risk, and the step-by-step safe method of work. UK law requires a suitable and sufficient risk assessment; main contractors usually require a RAMS before you start on site.
What it must include
- ✓Scope of works, site address, dates and who is involved
- ✓Hazards, who could be harmed and how
- ✓Control measures and the risk rating before and after
- ✓Sequence of works from preparation to completion
- ✓Plant, tools, permits and PPE
- ✓Competence, supervision and emergency arrangements
- ✓Briefing and sign-off by the people doing the work
You stay the duty holder: review the document for your site before work starts. SitePaper is a drafting tool, not a consultancy.
