RAMS template for solar PV installers
Solar PV installer RAMS should follow delivery, roof access, mounting, panel lifting, DC cabling, inverter connection, testing and commissioning. Roof falls, fragile surfaces, wind catching panels, dropped objects, handling strain and DC conductors energised by daylight are critical risks. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 and Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require competent planning and suitable precautions. Use competent roof workers and electricians with PV-specific knowledge, and confirm project certification or notification requirements. Provide collective edge protection and a real rescue arrangement, survey roof strength and fragility, and use a controlled lifting method with weather limits. Manage connectors, polarity and isolation to the system design; never assume covering panels alone guarantees a dead circuit.
- ✓Typical solar pv installer tasks: Solar PV installation, Roof access and roof work, Lifting operation with mechanical lifting equipment, Safe electrical isolation

In short
A RAMS (risk assessment and method statement) is a combined document that identifies the hazards of a specific job, the controls that reduce the risk, and the step-by-step safe method of work. UK law requires a suitable and sufficient risk assessment; main contractors usually require a RAMS before you start on site.
What it must include
- ✓Scope of works, site address, dates and who is involved
- ✓Hazards, who could be harmed and how
- ✓Control measures and the risk rating before and after
- ✓Sequence of works from preparation to completion
- ✓Plant, tools, permits and PPE
- ✓Competence, supervision and emergency arrangements
- ✓Briefing and sign-off by the people doing the work
You stay the duty holder: review the document for your site before work starts. SitePaper is a drafting tool, not a consultancy.
