Method statement for cleaning with hazardous products
A chemical-cleaning method statement must name each product, surface and application method, using the safety data sheet alongside a task-specific COSHH assessment. Skin and eye burns, dermatitis, breathing exposure, slips, environmental harm and dangerous reactions are common risks. COSHH 2002 requires exposure to hazardous substances to be prevented or adequately controlled, with more effective measures preferred over personal protective equipment. Substitute a less hazardous product where possible and specify ventilation, dilution, contact time, labelled containers and secure storage. Never mix products unless the manufacturer explicitly permits it—bleach and acidic cleaners can release toxic chlorine gas. Make spill materials and eyewash available as indicated by the assessment, and train staff on the exact dose and response.
