Method statement for solar PV installation
A solar PV installation method statement should follow the system design from delivery and roof access through mounting, DC cabling, inverter connection, testing and handover. Falls, fragile roofs, wind-loaded panels, manual handling, dropped objects and live DC generation in daylight are critical hazards. The Work at Height Regulations 2005 and Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 require competent planning and electrical precautions. Roofing and electrical work must be undertaken by people competent for their roles, with any certification scheme or building-control requirements confirmed for the project. Use collective edge protection and surveyed anchor arrangements, control panel lifting against wind, keep connectors protected, and apply the manufacturer’s shutdown and test sequence; covering a module is not automatically a reliable electrical isolation.
- ✓5 steps from preparation to completion
- ✓Covers: 3 key hazards and their controls
- ✓Permits: roof access permit where required, electrical permit where required
In short
A method statement sets out how a task will be carried out safely, step by step: preparation, set-up, the work itself and completion, with the plant, permits, competence and supervision needed. It puts the controls identified in the risk assessment into a safe system of work.
What it must include
- ✓Task description, location and duration
- ✓Step-by-step sequence of works
- ✓Plant, equipment and materials
- ✓Permits and isolations required
- ✓Competence, training and supervision
- ✓PPE and emergency arrangements
