Stress Risk Assessment Template
A work-related stress assessment should examine organisational causes rather than treating resilience as the main control. Workload and deadlines, control over work, manager and peer support, relationships, role clarity and change are the HSE Management Standards areas to explore. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to assess risks to health, including foreseeable stress-related harm. Use confidential staff input, absence patterns, turnover and workload evidence without trying to diagnose individuals. Separate urgent support for a person from longer-term correction of the work design. A practical action might be to redistribute recurring peak work, clarify priorities and review staffing at a fixed date, with a named owner; offering a helpline alone does not correct excessive demands.

In short
A risk assessment identifies what could cause harm in your work, who could be harmed and how, and what you do to control the risk. Every employer must make a suitable and sufficient assessment; with five or more employees the significant findings must be recorded.
What it must include
- ✓The hazards in the activity or workplace
- ✓Who might be harmed and how
- ✓Existing controls and further action needed
- ✓Risk rating (e.g. 5x5 likelihood x severity)
- ✓Who does what by when
- ✓Review date and when to review sooner
