Young persons risk assessment
A young persons risk assessment should be completed before a person under 18 starts work and should reflect their experience, maturity and awareness of risk. Machinery, workplace transport, harmful exposure, noise, vibration, lifting, work at height and extreme conditions may require tighter controls or prohibition. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require particular consideration of young people’s lack of experience and immaturity. Define what they may and may not do, provide understandable induction and nominate a supervisor with time to observe them. Do not treat age as the only measure of competence or assume college training covers the workplace. Review the assessment as duties, training or confidence change, and provide parents or guardians with required information for children below school-leaving age.

In short
A risk assessment identifies what could cause harm in your work, who could be harmed and how, and what you do to control the risk. Every employer must make a suitable and sufficient assessment; with five or more employees the significant findings must be recorded.
What it must include
- ✓The hazards in the activity or workplace
- ✓Who might be harmed and how
- ✓Existing controls and further action needed
- ✓Risk rating (e.g. 5x5 likelihood x severity)
- ✓Who does what by when
- ✓Review date and when to review sooner
